Douglas A-3 Skywarrior (eng. Douglas A-3 Skywarrior; until 1962, the designation A3D) is an American carrier-based bomber developed in the early 1950s. It was most widely used in auxiliary roles (flying tanker, electronic warfare aircraft, reconnaissance aircraft). It is the largest carrier-based jet aircraft; during its many years of service it was the heaviest aircraft operating from an aircraft carrier, earning it the nickname “The Whale” (later changed to “Electronic Whale” due to its use as an EW aircraft).

It was in service with the US Navy for more than three decades, entering service in the mid-50s and being withdrawn from service in 1991. It served as the basis for the creation of a modernized version – the B-66 Destroyer bomber, which served until the early 80s.

The US Navy announced a competition for a long-range carrier-based bomber with a bomb load of 10,000 pounds (4536 kg) in January 1948. She won the Douglas Aircraft competition, and a contract was signed with her on September 29, 1948.

The Skywarrior is one of two Navy attack aircraft conceived as a strategic bomber to fill the need for this type of aircraft. The A3D-1 was developed in the early 50s at the NAS[what?] in Jacksonville, Florida. The competing Martin P6M Seamaster also successfully passed tests, but never entered service due to the fact that the Navy was afraid of losing funding for the construction of surface ships and submarines, as their tasks intersect with those of the Air Force strategic bombers. The A-3 first flew on October 22, 1952. The first A-3s, then designated A3D-1s, were received by Heavy Attack Squadron ONE (VAH-1) on 31 March 1956.
