Entered according to Act of Congress,AD. 1866 by Currier & Ives, in the Clerk’s Office of the District Court of the Southern district of New York Date (original issuing): 1866 [copyright dated on the print] Date (this particular edition): Original 1st issue same as above Medium: Stone Lithography on heavy cotton wove paper Colors: Original Hand Colored with Some Gum Arabic Accent/Sheen Dimensions: image (44.4 x 65.3 cm or 17 7/16 x 25 3/4 inch), paper (48.5 x 67.3 cm or 19 1/8 x 26 1/2 inch) Credits: F.F. Palmer [original artist], Currier & Ives [Publisher] Special Notes: Ranked #9 and #12 in the Old [1930s] and New [1990s] Best 50 of Currier Ives Large folios respectively. Condition: The print overall is in very good condition, the image quality of this very rare large folio print is excellent [i.e., clear and clean image, strong and bright paper, vivid colors, nice margins all around, and slight but even age toning]. It was printed on high quality heavy wove rag paper with a blank verso. The print is safe for normal handling. Ample photos [front, back, and details] in high resolution are provided for your convenience of identification and judging its excellent quality independently. Flaws to note: The major flaws are all noted carefully below in the descent of seriousness, there is one small (3 inches) tear at right (nearly invisible), one tiny (1/2 inch) chipping of margin at left (not affecting image), a 3 inch bend from top, a 4 inch bend at bottom right corner, all are professionally repaired and reinforced from backside, there are a few tiny tears in the margins (not affecting image), there is also some stains on backside and an early pencil notation on backside, some framing paste residue stains around the edge of margins on backside, all as shown by the detailed photos. Additional Notes: The classic hand colored lithography prints published by Currier and Ives hardly need any introduction. Yet, of thousands of prints of Currier and Ives, the splendor was mainly with its relatively rare and large folio prints [such as the current one]. They were much more finely done with delicate design and attention to details and hand colored by its professional watercolorists. This particular print entitled The Rocky Mountains, emigrant crossing the plains, however, deserves some extra bragging, for it is regarded by many as one of the most popular and finest prints ever produced by Currier & Ives firm and are highly sought after by collectors. The original artwork was done by Fanny Palmer (1812-1876), the most proliferate staff artist of the Currier & Ives firm. This print was ranked #9 and #12 in the Old and New Best 50 of Currier Ives Large folios respectively and reflecting an enduring popularity of this particular subject. Historically, it was a quite accurate and still a powerful image that could transport a viewer into its place and time. You can see the ox driven caravans and the peaceful Indians on horse back etc. The print has a Conningham and Gale catalog number of 5196 and 5633 respectively.
